MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

The Memphis Summer Food Service program is happening at community centers around the city with intentions for serving children.

With 19 locations around the city, including Frayser, kids can eat for free during the summer.

Counselors say that it is important because some youngsters don't always get nutritious meals when they are not in school.

The kids also learn about nutrition.

"We teach them about the importance of eating all their vegetables and their fruit," site supervisor Tracey Mclin said.

Along with nutrition, the students get to exercise and participate in games and leadership and violence reduction programs.

Some of the older students have a chance to help teach the younger students.

"I teach them how to play games and get along with others," student Danyelle said.

The students say the best thing about the camp is that it's free. Within this summer, Memphis Summer Fun Food Program will provide some 28,000 free meals to children.
