Meet the summer weather interns

Each year, we welcome interns to the WMC Action News 5 Storm Tracking Team to spend the summer getting an inside look at what goes into being a broadcast meteorologist. Each member of the Storm Tracking Team works closely with the interns, helping them prepare to enter the business after graduation. This year we welcome two interns from Mississippi State University. Today, I'd like to introduce you to future meteorologist Ben Lang and turn it over to him to tell you a little about himself:

Hi, I’m Ben Lang, the weather intern this summer at WMC. I’m currently working on my Bachelor’s Degree in Professional Meteorology at Mississippi State University. I have been interested in the weather for as long as I can remember. At all times, I feel the need to know what current weather conditions are and what I can expect for the rest of the day and the week ahead. My favorite type of weather is severe weather. Although it can be destructive, it really is amazing to see beauty in the structures of the most impressive thunderstorms. Fortunately, there are jobs for people like me who love the weather. I hope to soon be a TV meteorologist so that I can help others prepare for weather conditions that will affect their daily lives, and keep them safe during severe weather. Trust me, getting up in front of the camera and pointing at things in front of a green wall is harder than it looks. My goal this summer is to try to improve at it every day so that I can put myself in the best possible position to find a job once I finish my degree.

Beyond the weather, my main passion is playing Ultimate Frisbee. Currently I’m playing for the club team at Mississippi State, the Memphis Ultimate Summer League, and also Memphis’s competitive club team. It is a quickly growing sport; it’s even recognized by the United States and World Olympic committees. If you are unfamiliar with the sport, simply search for it on YouTube and you will find everything you need to know. It is a great outlet for my competitive drive, and it’s also a great way to stay in shape. The tournament format of the sport is also a great way to visit new places and meet new people; so far I’ve traveled as far as Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
