MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Memphis City Councilman Myron Lowery released the draft of his proposal to remove the statue of Nathan Bedford Forrest from Health Sciences Park.

According to the proposal, the statue can be removed because it is "unfit for service or use by the City, since it [is] inconsistent with the purpose, intent, and future land uses of the Medical Overlay District."

The proposal also allows the City of Memphis to immediately remove and sell the statue.

Mayor A C Wharton and Lowery both back the plan to permanently move the statue, as well as Forrest and his wife's remains, out of the park.

Tuesday, the Memphis City Council will discuss the proposal. Stay with WMC Action News 5 for updates.
