MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

In response to the mass shooting and murders inside a historically African American church, local and state leaders are taking action to protect the Bluff City.

Tuesday, Mayor A C Wharton, TBI Director Mark Gwyn, US Attorney Ed Stanton, Tennessee Representative GA Hardaway, and the Baptist Ministerial Association met to discuss how to best protect black churches in Memphis.

The group said they don't believe that Memphis churches have anything to worry about, but churchgoers should remain alert.

"Across the country, I think when you look at incidents like Charleston, it reminds us that we have to be vigilant," said US Attorney Ed Stanton.

Mayor A C Wharton added that he is creating a task force to make sure churches in the Memphis community are safe from attacks.
