A Lakeland family sighed with relief when their 10-year-old daughter was found.

Shelby County Sheriff's Department deputies spent over two hours searching for Emily Martin once her family reported her missing from her home in the 10000 block of Woodland Pine Cove West near Lakeland, Tennessee.

"Oh, I can't imagine," said neighbor Brandy Taylor. "I mean, I really can't. Honestly, just can't put myself in the mother's shoes. I'm glad that she found her and that, hopefully, this will never happen again."

Investigators found her, unharmed, sitting behind a trash can just after 1 p.m. in a neighbor's yard on her street.  A friend of the family said she fell asleep there.

"She could've gotten lost," said neighbor Wesley Taylor. "She could've gotten hurt. She could've gotten kidnapped. There's tons of things that could've happened."

A friend of the family said Martin was born with emotional and behavioral disabilities.

Neighbor's said they've never seen anything like Wednesday's incident.

"I think as parents, we do a pretty good job around here in this neighborhood, specifically of keeping a good eye on our children," Brandy Taylor added. "I'm sure it's just an isolated incident and it will never happen again."

SCSO said the young girl got into a fight with her adoptive mother and ran out of the house.

A family friend added that over the past few weeks, Martin has been acting out more often.

Martin's family did not want to talk on camera, but said they plan on seeking help.

No one will face charges in this case.
