A late-night snack turned into a crime scene for many customers eating at Waffle House in the 1500 block on Sycamore view Thursday around 1:30 a.m.

It's a little scary since we're just staying right around the corner, so I'm not familiar with the area at all and we just booked the hotel " Joyce Glasco, a Waffle House customer, said.

Thursday afternoon, the on-duty manager at the store was still very shaken up.

The company refused to make an official statement.

Employees said the manager worked in the back of the restaurant for hours trying to piece together everything that happened.

“It’s really not a shock because you know crime is everywhere,” Darius Lewis, a frequent customer of Waffle House, said. “But you just have to take those extra precautions. Just be safe, pay attention to your surroundings.”

According to Memphis police, a man walked up to the on-duty manager with his face covered by a white T-shirt and demanded money while implying he had a handgun tucked under his shirt.

The manager opened the register and the suspect took out the money. It is unclear how much he took.

Police said the suspect ran north from the business and a witness chased him into the woods.

Police set up a perimeter but did not find the suspect, despite searching from helicopter and using search dogs.

The thief is described as white, between 30-40 years old, with blue or green eyes and is 5-foot-9, approximately 180 pounds with tattoos on his neck and fingers. He was last seen wearing a brown hoodie and blue jeans.
