The University of Memphis Athletics Department agreed to allow Austin Nichols to transfer schools.

“I spoke with Austin Nichols this morning and informed him the University of Memphis will grant to him a conditional release from his National Letter of Intent. While we are disappointed in this outcome and the timing of this situation, we respect his wishes to pursue other opportunities. We appreciate Austin’s contributions to the Tigers and wish him well in his future endeavors,” Memphis Athletic Director Tom Bowen said.

Nichols announced Tuesday that he wanted to leave Memphis.

Nichols, who led the Tigers in scoring with 13.3 points last season, said it is best for him and his family to move on from Memphis.

“It has been a pleasure to have Austin Nichols as a student-athlete at the University of Memphis for the past two years. His performance on the court has provided many thrilling moments for our fans. Austin has been a wonderful role model on our campus and in our community. We offer our best wishes for his continued success both on and off the court,” University of Memphis President M. David Rudd said.

Nichols' release is conditional, which means that he can't go to a school that the Tigers will play on their upcoming schedule, in the American Athletic Conference or in non-conference games against Virginia, Iowa or Providence (schools the U of M will play in the Emerald Coast Classic) or the University of Tennessee.
