TUNICA CO., MS (WMC) -

Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant announced a state of emergency in Tunica County School District on Thursday.

According to a news release from Bryant's office, there is a threat to the safety, security and educational interests of students in the district. Details about the "severe emergency" were not clear, but it comes just days after the Superintendent resigned.

Bryant released the following statement:

“My first concern is for the students and parents of the Tunica County School District. We will continue to work with the Mississippi Board of Education to make sure a proper education is provided.”

The proclamation allows the Mississippi Board of Education to implement corrective actions on the Tunica County School District, including abolishing the existing school board and its Superintendent.
