A modern-day neighborhood watch in the form of a website gives people the upper hand when it comes to what is going on in their communities.
Bartlett Police Department decided to team up with the popular website and mobile app, Nextdoor. BPD believes the partnership is a game changer.
Joey Daniel bought his 6-year-old a bicycle for his birthday.
"That night, someone came into my carport and went into my shed and stole the bike," he explained.
Daniel posted the about the crime on Two hours later, someone responded and said they had seen the bike.
From there, Bartlett police officers got involved.
"Within 30 minutes, it [the bike] was at my house," Daniel said.
"With Nextdoor, I can target specific neighborhoods to get information out there or send it just specifically to our city," Lt. Todd Halford, Bartlett Police Department, said.
Subscribers to the website and mobile app can only join networks linked to their address. Other users will not see your address, only the neighborhood in which you live.
"I don't know what car is supposed to be in your driveway, but your neighbors do. That's the kind of communication that needs to take place. We have to focus on getting to know our neighbors again," Lt. Halford said.
Halford suggests setting up an account to see your neighborhood, as well as surrounding neighborhoods, so you know what's going on around you.
Barlett Police Department does not monitor, so if you have an emergency, you should still call 911.
Aleks Sellers, a nanny, thinks Nextdoor is a good way to go after hearing Daniel's success story.
"I'll use it. I'm going to get it," Sellers said.
And for Daniel and his son, it made all the difference.
"It's a really awesome website," he added.
