A dedication ceremony in Munford, Tennessee gave a retired U.S. Marine unique independence.

Corporal Christian Brown led 163 combat missions before stepping on an explosive device while deployed in Afghanistan in 2011. He survived trauma to his arms and hands; both of his legs were amputated.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday on a specially-adapted smarthome that will be built specifically for Cpl. Brown. Guests like the Patriot Guard Riders and kids from summer camp were in attendance.

Gary Sinise Foundation's R.I.S.E.  (Restoring Independence Supporting Empowerment) Program and the Building for America’s Bravest partner program will help build the custom home.

Just the thought of being self-sufficient in his new place means freedom for Brown.

"It's just time to get back to being my own person and providing for myself," he said. "It's really exciting because I know I can live on my own and I can take care of myself, even being handicap and being in a wheelchair, I still have all the accessibility of a normal person through technology."

Crews tore down the old house on the property to make room for the smart home. The expected completion date is early 2016.

"I just want to thank everybody and I love them to death because they took care of me when they didn’t have to," said Brown.

The Gary Sinise Foundation honors defenders, veterans, first responders, their families and those in need by creating and supporting unique programs designed to entertain, educate, inspire, strengthen and build communities.

The following companies stepped up as sponsors making the build possible: The Marcus Foundation, FedEx and the Semper Fi Fund, The Carrington Companies, Carrington Charitable Foundation, Core Brands, Benjamin Moore, GE, National Wood Flooring Association, American OEM, Shubert Design Furniture, North American Van Lines, Cord Moving and Storage, Creative Home Design and D&D Custom Homes, LLC.
