MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A child drowned in a pool at the Trails at Mt. Moriah apartment complex Sunday.

Neighbors found the 5-year-old Sunday afternoon and started giving him CPR.

Paramedics soon arrived and took the boy to the hospital, but he did not survive.

Neighbors said there were no adults at the pool at the time of the drowning.

Police said adults left a 12-year-old girl in charge of the boy at the apartment pool when the tragedy happened.

"I guess he didn't know how to swim," a witness said. "He just kept jumping in and out of the water. I guess too much water got in and he started drowning,"

"It should have been prevented because he should have had supervision anyway," neighbor Renel Whit said,

Witnesses said there were no adults around when the incident happened.

Barbara King from the Family Exchange Center said a 12-year-old is typically too young to be a supervisor at a pool.

"Most 12-year-olds, not all, are able to keep a child at home or where it's not a dangerous situation, but I'm not so sure where there is water that that's a good idea," said King.

This tragedy comes only a week after 13-year-old Cedric Walton drowned after jumping the fence at a city pool in South Memphis.

The boy's family is now planning his funeral.

No charges have been filed as police continue to investigate the most recent incident.
