According to Memphis police, a child died after he was found unresponsive.

The 2-year-old was pronounced dead earlier Monday afternoon at LeBonheur Children's Hospital, but doctors recalled that pronouncement, Police said he was in extremely critical condition. Doctors pronounced him again shortly afterward.

MPD said the emergency response teams took the baby from the Sterling Apartments.

Neighbors said the boy’s mother rode to LeBonheur in the ambulance around noon.

When the boy was taken off life support, he showed faint signs of life and brain activity. He was put back on life support, only to be pronounced dead again around 4:30.

"A panicked state. Everybody running back and forth. Didn't know what was going on," said neighbor Steven Nance.

While police have not confirmed the child was found in a bathtub, neighbors said that was the talk of the neighborhood.

"They said a two-year-old was left in the tub,” said Angie Keys, who lives at Sterling Apartments. “ I wouldn't leave a two-year-old unattended. I got a two-year-old and a five-year-old and neither one of them would be left unattended."

Police said the circumstances are still unknown.

"A little, adorable cute boy,” Nance said. “Everyone pretty much loves him. You can't not love a two-year-old."

The investigation is still underway. Investigators have not said if the parents were present when the child became unresponsive.
