The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for much of the central United States, and the WMC Action News 5 coverage area is right in the middle of those sweltering temperatures.

Doctors warn that the heat could be more dangerous than you think.

"Be careful, go out at the right time of the morning or late evening, hydration, hydration, hydration," said Dr. Mark Castellaw.

If you are looking for relief from the heat, all community centers in Memphis serve as cooling centers during business hours.  For a complete list of all centers in Memphis, click here.

Additionally, the Orange Mound Community Center at 2572 Park Avenue stays open as an after-hours location until 8 p.m.

To arrange transportation around the city, you can call MATA at 901-636-2525.

MLGW also recognizes that customers with discontinued service may need utilities to cope with the high temperatures. The utilities company will activate their Special Reconnection Program Tuesday, allowing customers to pay a fee to reconnect their services despite an outstanding balance.

Drink plenty of water, and stay safe, Mid-South!
