Memphis Grizzlies fans filled the lobby of the FedEx Forum as they awaited the arrival of Marc Gasol.
Tuesday afternoon a press conference was held to re-introduce the all-star center back to the Grizz community after signing his new five-year deal.
Gasol, who is known for not wanting to be the center of attention, had all eyes on him.
“To me, to see all this attention, I think it’s too much for me. I don’t deserve all this love that you guys are giving me. This is not about me, it’s about making you guys proud,” said Gasol.
Big Spain said that he always knew that he would be coming back to Memphis and even said he did not mean to keep Grizz fans waiting so long.
“Things in Spain kind of take a little bit longer. You know, we’re real laid back and I’m not on social media, so I wasn’t aware of all the commotion,” said Gasol.
Gasol said his family even knew before him that Memphis was where he was going to stay and with the support of his teammates, he made his official decision.
“Of course Mike (Conley) played a huge part in my decision. Once I talked to him, and he being on board, of course you never know what the future holds, but Mike being on board means the world to me and I think that kind of sealed the deal.”
He even told owner Robert Pera on July 1st that he was not going anywhere, but because of NBA rules Pera was not able to say anything.
Now that is official, Grizz fans can rejoice in having Big Spain back for another five years.
“There was really never another option, it was pretty easy,” Gasol said,
