MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Memphis police arrested a Texas man accused of trying to bring drugs into the Memphis area.

Police pulled 49-year-old Willard Hampton over on Interstate-55 near McLemore Road on Sunday. Officers said he was driving a tractor-trailer full of drugs-- 378 pounds of marijuana with a street value of a little more than $500 thousand.

Investigators also said they found almost $4 thousand in cash and a gun.

"Each one of those could represent a corner where someone could be standing on the corner selling drugs," said Police Director Toney Armstrong. "Also, want this to represent that as a potential victim, each one of those could be a victim of a drive-by shooting, or some robbery in an attempt to take these products."

Police added that Hampton picked up a woman on his way from El Paso, Texas to Memphis. He took her to a casino. However, officers said she was not charged and was not a player in the drug investigation case.

Hampton faces charges in Shelby County, including possession of a controlled substance with intention to manufacture, sell, or deliver and possession of a firearm during a dangerous felony. He is in jail on a $500 thousand bond.
