MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A man is charged with first-degree murder in the death of a 2-year-old.

Memphis Fire personnel responded to a 2-year-old drowning in a bathtub in the 4100 block of Woodbranch Court on Monday.

When fire officials arrived, Marterrius Hite told them he found 2-year-old Deandre Davis floating in the bathtub and not breathing. Hite originally told Memphis police that Davis was his son, but police said he is not the child's father. Hite's family said Davis was his girlfriend's child.

Davis was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Many neighbors thought the death was an accident.

"They say a 2-year-old was left in a bathtub," one neighbor said. "I wouldn't leave a 2-year-old unattended."

Investigators and hospital staff noticed multiple cuts and bruises covering the child's body.

Officers questioned Hite. According to a police affidavit, he said he caused several of the injuries on Davis.

Hite said he "grabbed him by the neck and popped him several times with a belt on his stomach and legs" before finding him drowning in the bathtub.

The Medical Examiner said the toddler died of blunt force trauma to his head and stomach.

Hite faces several charges including aggravated child abuse and first-degree murder. He is scheduled to appear in court Friday.
