MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Even though the heat index is over 100, the group “Service over Self” is voluntarily fixing roofs and beating the heat.

Service Over Self campers from Christ United Methodist Church make up one of 32 teams spread out across the city, working on rooftops and home repair.

"It's hot. It's very hot work and your shirt will be drenched by the end of the day for sure though,” one camper said.

Their end goal is to have a new roof for the new Bike Repair Center for the Carpenter Art Garden.

They are fast workers, but the heat is not backing down.

As a matter of fact, heat exhaustion can come quickly.

"The goal is that we are leaving the parking lot at 8 so that close to 8 they're starting work for the day,” one organizer said.

For safety, experts said drink lots of water, take frequent breaks and if you have to be outside like these campers...do it in the morning. Take time to cool off, get some food, and do it all over again.

Heat or no heat, the campers will be out tomorrow to hopefully finish the rooftop.

Another group of campers are coming next week and organizers are hoping for cooler temperatures.
