Hundreds of kids gathered at a camp Thursday to see a very special visitor.

Signs covered the walls, decorations were set up in the gym, and cheerleaders were waiting on the sidelines.

The kids all waited for a visit from the Grindfather himself-- Memphis Grizzlies shooting guard and small forward Tony Allen.

Allen wasted no time during his visit to St. Paul’s Catholic school Thursday to give the students a very important message.

“A lot of times you see a lot of kids, lot of days they sit behind the PlayStation or Xbox and don’t do much activity, let alone studying. So today, I just came in and made a huge emphasis on education and fitness.”

The kids have been learning the importance of education and fitness all summer as part of an eight-week long summer camp, run by Catholic Charities of West Tennessee.

The camp, called Camp Love & Learn, is for kids in Raleigh/Frayser and Whitehaven.

Volunteers at the camp provide academics, nutrition, and fun for kids all summer.

The “FIRST TEAM ALL-DEFENSE” star told them to stay in school, be involved and stay active. He took questions from the crowd, gave autographs, and took one final picture with the entire camp.

His message left a lasting impression on the campers.

“He told us to work hard in education,” one said.

“I thought it was really good that he told us to always try to further our education because ultimately that’s what we fall back on,” said another camper.

Allen hopes his visit inspired the kids to work harder on their education and their physical fitness.

“I was right around the corner anyway, so it was just a hop, skip, and a jump. And a perfect opportunity to come here and encourage the kids so I took advantage of it. That’s what it’s all about—having a good heart.”

And in this case, just another example of all-heart beyond the hardwood.
