Biker Dad: Easier riding; City schedules pothole repairs, repaving

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

It's no secret. Sometimes riding a motorcycle in Memphis feels more like riding a bucking bronco in a rodeo. Thousands of potholes pit the streets, especially after the ice storms this past winter.

After months of dodging these tire-killing craters, the city announced the schedule for the latest repaving plans. The newest city budget earmarks $15 million dollars for street repaving 230 "lane miles" of road. That's about 3 percent of the city streets.

So, since the streets of Memphis aren't paved with gold, don't expect to have a pothole-free city any time soon. This latest round of paving projects ends in December, just in time for winter, more ice storms and for mother nature to dish out a whole new round of car-swallowing canyons in our streets.

Here's the schedule of the projects through August 4. The work may ease some of the pain in your neck, but it will also cause some headaches of its own. You'll want to plan to take alternate routes, and the city is asking people not to park on the streets during repaving.

How do they pick which streets get the new blacktop love? According to a news release from the city, "The City of Memphis makes a determination of street resurfacing projects based on a priority rating system that considers the age and overall condition of the street. As with all construction, weather impacts may occur, causing us to alter the schedule as needed. For questions concerning impact to the right-of- way or to report a pothole, please call 3-1-1 on your smartphone or 901-636-6500 from your landline."
