Every week for the last six weeks, a group of volunteers with enormous hearts and incredible tolerance for the heat have worked on a Binghampton roof.

But every week, an unlikely volunteer joined their ranks.  Twelve-year-old PJ Martin just moved into the neighborhood to live with his grandmother. He said he didn't have any plans for his summer.

"I was normally just sitting around, playing a game on the phone," Martin explained.

One day, he passed by the house and saw Service Over Self summer staff member Brandon Moritz.  PJ asked Moritz if he could help out with the roof repair project, and the two have worked together ever since.

"It feels good to look up there and see that me and my team did more than we expected," Martin said.

PJ is learning a lot about roof repair, and even more about life.  At the same time, he's also teaching SOS campers a lesson about giving and receiving.

"Everyone has something to offer, a gift that can bless me, bless another person's life, bless a house and bless a street, bless a neighborhood," Moritz added.

As they finished their construction project, PJ and his older team members built character, one nail at a time.
