A Better Mid-South: Preventing drownings

Editorial by WMC Action News 5 Vice President Tracey Rogers:

Thirteen-year-old Cedric Walton died after drowning in a community pool.

We lost 5-year-old Jalen Bike after he drowned in a swimming pool at a Memphis apartment complex.

It appears both boys could not swim.

Every year, we approach summer with apprehension because we know we are going to lose children to drowning.

Not enough of our children know how to swim or how to save themselves if they get in trouble in the water.

This Monday night at 10, Jerica Phillips is going to show specific ways you can save yourself or someone else from drowning.

We have to do more to teach our children to be safe while swimming.

If you have ideas on how to protect our children from drowning, email me at abettermidsouth@wmctv.com or go to my Facebook page and leave me a message there.

Teaching our kids to swim and how to save themselves in the water will make this a Safer and Better Mid-South.
