Volunteers at Hope Church learned what they will do when they go into one of 10 Shelby County Schools to help second graders become more proficient readers.

“Let them read all the way down the list as far as they can go,” said Cynthia Alexander Mitchell of Shelby County Schools. “The program doesn’t ask the volunteers to teach them to read. It asks them to help with vocabulary.”

Dr. Mitchell said Team Read is a crucial program to ensure third grade students can read because at that level, students shift from learning to read to reading to learn. In Shelby County Schools, only 30 percent of third graders read proficiently. Those who cannot are four times more likely to drop out.

Volunteer Chad Johnson knows the difference it can make.

“I grew up in a background where I didn’t get a lot of attention when I was a kid, broken family, that kind of stuff,” Johnson said. “It just meant a lot to know that there were adults that cared for me. I’m just hoping to pay back.”

The volunteers will actually go to the school they are assigned and help a student 30 minutes twice a week. If you want to volunteer go the Shelby County Schools Team Read website for more information.
