MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Olive Branch police said 43-year-old Robert Young jumped behind the wheel of an ambulance at the Memphis mental health institute at 3 a.m. Friday.

An institute spokesperson said the driver and his partner were transporting an inmate for medical care.

The driver told police that when he parked the ambulance, he left for about six minutes.

While he was gone, a homeless man hopped inside the ambulance.

"They're extremely important . I mean they're life saving equipment. It's just --- that's insane," Ashley Canady said.

An EMHC Ambulance Services spokesperson said because of the heat, it's normal for drivers to leave the vehicles running, unlocked, and unattended when taking a client inside.

Jeffery Williams works nearby.

"They're real important . If somebody would of been hurt and they need that ambulance, then he done stole it and that was the only one left ... Then what they gonna do?" Williams said.

Robert Young then led Memphis police on a high speed chase, ending in Olive Branch.

The Memphis, Southaven and Olive branch police departments teamed up to get him off the road.

He made his way to Goodman and Malone, where police deployed road spikes to end the chase.

"He could have crashed it into someone. I mean he could have killed a lot of people," Canady said.

Young is charged with fleeing and eluding a law enforcement officer, reckless driving, possession of narcotics paraphernalia, and driving while license suspended.

According to Olive Branch Police, charges related to the possession of the stolen ambulance are still pending .
