MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A pregnant woman has lost her baby just days before she was expected to give birth.

The 22-year-old woman was shot multiple times and taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The shooting occurred in the 1000 block of Kirkland Avenue Saturday night and the suspect has not been found.

Witnesses said gun shots echoed through their home at 11 p.m. Saturday.

They said they ran outside and saw the woman crawling from a vehicle parked on the side of the road.

Police said the woman was in the vehicle with an acquaintance who shot her.

"It hurts me so much. I tried to save both of their lives," witness Jacqueline Jackson said.

As a mother, seeing a woman struggling this far into her pregnancy forced Jackson to spring into action.

"The baby was balled up in her stomach. That is why I was crying like 'Help her please,'" Jackson said.

The victim underwent surgery, but the baby did not survive. Jackson said hearing about the child's death is heartbreaking, and she hopes the man she saw running from the scene is caught soon.

"I saw a man on the bridge. He was wearing a red shirt and blue pants. I have never seen this man in my life," Jackson said.

Neighbors said they are feeling uneasy.

"It's painful because I can't take all this. It's traumatizing to me," one neighbor said.
