MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

The RiverFit Hackathon took place this weekend.

Organizers said it is a unique two-day event that encourages students to show off their mobile app developmental skills.

They also got a chance to work on a "real-world project" to benefit our community. That project was the Memphis Grizzlies Riverfront Fitness Trail.

Students made teams and challenged each other to build mobile apps that would enhance the RiverFit experience.

"Most of the kids had no exposure to coding or mobile app development, and what they were able to demonstrate today is that they can actually build. Over the course of the summer, they learn to build," organizer Petya Kirilova-Grady said.

WMC Action News 5's Lauren Squires was part of the event, and she served as a judge.
