Look for the blue moon

The second full moon of the month occurs July 31 The second full moon of the month occurs July 31

We've all heard the saying "once in a blue moon," but do we really know what that means?  We typically use the phrase when referring to something that rarely happens. This Friday, you can look to the sky for the moon and that rare once in a blue moon moment. You won't see the moon as blue in color, but what you will see is technically a blue moon. The term is used to refer to a month with two full moons. A full moon occurs in the lunar cycle approximately every 29.5 days and over time that will allow for a full moon to occur at the beginning of a particular month and again at the end. The second full moon of the month is referred to as a blue moon. This is one of those months. On July 1, there was a full moon and the next occurs this Friday, July 31. The last blue moon occurred on August 31, 2012. You may want to catch a glimpse of this one, because you'll have to wait until January 31, 2018, for the next one.
