A 16-year-old died when a zero turn lawn mower he was on flipped over onto him.

DeSoto County Sheriff Bill Rasco identified the teen as Barrett Williams. Rasco said the lawn mower flipped into a ditch, killing Williams at the scene.

The area was blocked off as deputies investigated how the crash happened.

"We have been cutting yards our whole life,” neighbor Garrett Macellan said. “A lot of us have a lot of land and have always been cutting yards. It’s something that can happen to any of us, but you wouldn't expect it."

It is something neighbors said they will be more careful doing in the future.

Students and faculty at North Point Christian School are mourning the death. The president of the school said he was a great student and someone who will truly be missed.

“Our hearts are broken, and we are broken,” said President David Manley.

Tuesday afternoon, the flag at the school was lowered to half-staff as they learned of the death.

Manley said it is now time to remember Williams and pray. Manley said the school is preparing an event to remember Williams by the beginning of the school year.

"You ask God why and trust God doesn't make mistakes,” he said. “It hurts and it’s painful and unfortunately it occurs too much sometimes."
