The Tennessee Department of Education released the 2015 TCAP (Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program) data for all districts.

Shelby County Schools remain a TVAAS Level 5 District (the highest level of growth). Ninety-three schools achieved a Level 4 and 5. Thirteen moved from TVAAS Level 1 to Level 5. Twelve property schools (named lowest performers in the state) achieved a TVAAS Level 4 or 5.

"Just very proud of our school leaders and our teachers," SCS Superintendent Dorsey Hopson said. " I think that what the data shows, while we certainly have a long way to go, our teachers and principals can do this work."

SCS showed improvement in nine of 10 subject areas, outpacing the state in math. The highest gain for SCS was in Algebra II.

Thirteen of 17 SCS iZone schools showed improvement.

However, statewide scores in elementary and middle school reading dropped. Both Shelby County Schools and Achievement School District schools in Frayser saw a decline in scores.

"You think about some of the poverty we have here," Hopson said. "We don't have enough parents to do fundamental things like reading out loud, helping kids to decode text."

Of the 21 schools listed for state takeover last year, 19 of those schools are still at the bottom.

Though ASD students made a gain in math and science, overall reading levels are down. Only 13.8 percent of students are at grade reading level.

"We still have a lot of work to do," ASD Superintendent Chris Barbic said. "We're celebrating today, but as soon as the celebration is over, we're going to get back to work and make our kids on track to be in the top 25 percent of the state."

Now the district will focus on the future as a part of "Destination 2025" which calls for 80 percent of students to be college-and-ready, with 90 percent graduating on time and 100 percent of graduates enrolled in post secondary education.
