QUITMAN COUNTY, MS (WMC) -

Mayor Joe Willie Smith of Lambert, Mississippi, faces charges on two separate indictments.

Attorney General Public Integrity Division investigators and Quitman County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested Smith late Tuesday night, according to Attorney General Jim Hood.

The first charge is for one count of statutory rape; the second is for one count of gratification of lust.

Smith, 57, is in Quitman County Jail with no bond set, awaiting trial.

Hood released the following statement Wednesday:

"We understand the significant impact that an arrest of a public official has on the community. This case will be handled in the same manner and with the same integrity as every other investigation."

If convicted, Smith faces up to 30 years in prison for statutory rape and 15 years for gratification of lust.
