A mother tried to sell her child in Tupelo, according to investigators.

The Department of Human Services said Kathryn Herring, 31, went to several families around Tupelo and Lee County offering her child for adoption in exchange for money.

"I've been here 16 years today, and I have never seen this situation," Tupelo Police Lieutenant Lynette Sandling said.

Investigators said they started investigating this case in February.

"During the investigation, we did determine on numerous occasions Ms. Herring did try to sell her child for profit," Sandling said.

According to Lt. Sandling, cash was the leading factor for this crime.

"I think at some point she was in need of money" Sandling said. "And that was just an out for her."

Investigators also said Herring has been diagnosed with a mental illness.

The now 18-month-old child was taken into custody with DHS.

Herring’s bond is $250,000. The case is scheduled to be presented to a grand jury on October 7.
