By the numbers: Was this one of the hottest Julys?

We are wrapping up July, and it seemed like it was brutally hot this month. There were several weeks where we had a long stretch of heat advisories and excessive heat warnings. But was this July abnormally warm? I dove into the climatology in Memphis to break down the weather in July by the numbers.

There were 25 days at or above 90 degrees this month, with the highest temperature topping out at 99 degrees. We hit 99 on the 29th and 20th, so we were just shy of 100 degrees on two occasions. However, the heat index was a different story. There were 21 days with a heat index above 100 degrees; the highest heat index topped out at 109 degrees on July 29th. I’m sweating just thinking about that day! Our average temperature for the month was around 84 degrees, which puts us nearly 2 degrees above normal. Long story short, this still wasn’t even close to the hottest July ever. We would need an average monthly temperature at or above 84.9 to break the top ten list, so several more days near 100 would have been necessary in order for that to occur.

Not only were temperatures above average, but so were monthly rainfall totals. There was over 5 inches of rain at the Memphis International Airport this July and most of it fell on July 23rd and July 3rd.  We got almost 3 and a half inches of rain on the 3rd. Remember all of the flooding that day? We set the daily rainfall record for that day!

In addition, we had the 3rd highest all-time crest on the Mississippi River for the month of July for records dating back to 1885. We also set the record high minimum temperature (meaning the warmest overnight temperature) for the day of July 21st and 30th.
