Kym Clark: It's WMC Action News 5's Superintendents Week! Joining me now is Dr. David Roper, superintendent of Millington Municipal Schools. Welcome! Good to have you with us!

Dr. David Roper: Good to be here. Thank you.

Kym: First let's talk about the first day of school. What should parents and students expect?

Roper: Well, they should expect that we'll have a calmer opening this year than last year although we were pleased with how things went last year, but since it was our first year of operation, there was a little bit more uncertainty, but we feel that when our students report on August 10, they'll expect that we'll be up and running and looking forward to a new school year.

Kym: Not quite as hectic. That's always a good thing. So how is enrollment going for Millington Schools?

Roper: We expect to be up a little bit this year over last year. Last year we were a little bit under 2,700. We expect to be a little bit over that this year. Again, we have a situation in Millington where we have a number of students outside our attendance zones who choose to attend our schools through an out of district transfer, and we're already receiving a number of those requests. Last year we had about 400 out of district transfers attending out of 2,700 and we expect that number to be up somewhat this year.

Kym: A little bit of bad news...TCAP scores were recently released and Millington saw decline. What are your goals to try to shore those scores up for the coming year?

Roper: We do have work to do, especially in the area of literacy. We expect to meet our accountability goals in most areas. We have some more to do, as I said in literacy. We're going to have that as a specific targeted area for improvement this year. Also with our special education students, our students with disabilities, we want to make sure that we have the right emphasis that we have those students progressing as they need to be as well.

Kym: We want to thank you so much for joining us today and hope you have good luck heading into the new year and success as well this year!

Roper: Thank you! We're looking forward to it. I think we're going to have a very good school year.
