Kym Clark: It's WMC Action News 5 Superintendents Week! Joining us this morning is Tammy Mason, superintendent of Arlington Community Schools. Welcome, good to have you with us.

Tammy Mason: Thank you. I’m very happy to be here this morning.

Kym: First of all, what can parents expect heading into the new school year?

Mason: I think they can expect some new and exciting things. We've really focused this year on making our school district our own to meet our community needs. We're rolling out new technology initiatives, one on one in our middle school and our STEM initiative so really working on focusing on our academic programing for our students.

Kym: I know last year was probably hectic. What do you think will be different from this year getting ready versus last year?

Mason: This year what we've experienced is that we're able to really work on the details. Last year we were working on more operational issues and now we're able to look at what are needs are. We have a year under our belts. We've identified what those needs are, and now we're working to get them addressed.

Kym: Here we are a week away from the first day of school. What do you expect?

Mason: Its hard to believe. I'm excited. I met with all the school administrators and we talked about how different it was. Our expectation is that we are going to be much more personalized this year than what we were last year.

Kym: The city of Arlington has seen a lot of growth. Probably one of the fastest growing areas in the Mid-South anyway. How are you all keeping up with that and what are your plans for the future?
Mason: That's one of our big priorities this year is working on our five-year strategic plan, which is for our capital plans. We do have two elementary schools that we may look into doing some shifting from one to another. But Arlington is growing, we have a lot of kids coming in. We've been busy over the summer enrolling new kids.

Kym: What about expansion? Any plans for that?

Mason: We don't have any plans at this time. We are in good shape with the four buildings that we have and of course, we are waiting to see what Lakeland does because we are housing a lot of their students but we think right now we have adequate space for our needs for the next several years.

Kym: Continued success to you and Arlington Schools this year.

Mason: Thank you for having me.

Kym: Thank you for joining us.
