Mayor to announce layoffs

Action News 5 has learned that Memphis' Chief Administrative Officer Keith McGee intends to announce the layoffs of approximately 198 permanent employees at a press conference called at the Hall of Mayors. In a letter sent to City Councilmembers this morning, Mayor Willie Herenton explained it is Phase II of his budget reduction plan and that it will also include the elimination of all temporary employees (except school crossing guards, Memphis Sexual Assault Resource Center forensic nurses and EMA emergency technicians).
