MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

As they grieved the loss of fellow officer Sean Bolton, MPD officers made visits to National Night Out events, some not far from where officer Bolton was shot and killed.

"That type of crime is unusual in this particular area," said Dean Brown, who has lived in the area for 30 years.

Those, like Brown, who live in the area are still in shock.

On Knightway Street, police showed up once again, but not for a crime. This was to connect with citizens.

"It's better if we have a relationship with the police department," said Jurice Cole, who is a neighborhood watch leader.

Cole said like Bolton, her son survived a military tour of duty, just to come home to Memphis and be shot and killed.

Cole said events like National Night Out open communication between police officers and the community, hopefully helping to stop crime.

"They don't know if they will make it home or not tonight," Cole said.

National Night Out is about stopping crime, not just against residents, but police officers, too.

"We try to watch everyone and know everyone," Brown said.
