MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

For the first time in more than 10 years, DeSoto County residents voted for a new Superintendent of Education, but the vote did not yield a clear winner.

Four candidates ran for the position:

  • Jerry Darnell
  • Jim Ferguson
  • Edith Robinson
  • Cory Uselton

No candidate was elected because none of them had more than 50 percent of the votes. There will be a runoff race on August 25 between the top two candidates, Corey Uselton (31 percent) and Jim Ferguson (28 percent).

All of the candidates engaged in a debate sponsored by WMC Action News 5, DeSoto Times-Tribune, and the League of Women Voters.

The first day of school for DeSoto County Schools is Wednesday, August 5.
