First case of West Nile Virus confirmed in Shelby County

SHELBY COUNTY, TN (WMC) -

The Shelby County Health Department and the Tennessee Department of Health has confirmed the first human case of West Nile Virus in Shelby County and the state of Tennessee.

As of August 5, West Nile Virus has been detected in these zip codes within Shelby County: 38002, 38017, 38104, 38106, 38107, 38108, 38109, 38111, 38112, 38114, 38116, 38117, 38118, 38122, 38127, 38128, 38133, 38135, 38141.

Shelby County Health Department officials urge residents to continue taking precautions to prevent mosquito bites and protect themselves against West Nile Virus.

Earlier this week, WMC Action News 5's Meteorologist Spencer Denton documented a warming trend that's leading to a longer mosquito season in Memphis.
