It started with an attempt to light up the neighborhood with blue front porch lights to honor fallen Memphis Police Officer Sean Bolton. But when Stacey LaMondue couldn't find enough bulbs, she was inspired by a blue, star-shaped, helium balloon.

LaMondue, a former police officer, lives around the corner from where Officer Bolton was shot and killed last Saturday. She wanted to do something to honor Officer Bolton and remind neighbors of his sacrifice.

It didn't take long for LaMondue and several others to tie 87 star shaped balloons to all the mailboxes in the neighborhood Tuesday night.

"It was the least we could do and I was looking for something that we could do to show our support and I was blessed to be in the store and look up," said LaMondue. "I told her 'how many do you have?' And I bought them all."

She got several of her neighbors and their kids to help.  They got permission from every single person in the neighborhood.  They all donated money to cover the cost of the balloons.  A photo of their efforts was posted on social media and the story was shared across the country.

"I think it's really great that they're helping us to support the Memphis Police Department and to take back our neighborhood," said LaMondue.

Barbara Becton lives next door to LaMondue and thinks the blue star balloons were even more powerful than their original idea.

"Stars represent angels and we have had an angel ascend into heaven, so that was perfect for the stars to be here to represent the angel that just left," said Becton. "We do care about those who protect us; they are our angels here on earth."

The neighborhood had planned to put more balloons on mailboxes along the Sea of Blue route but the rain delayed their plans.

Memphis police arranged a Sea of Blue that started outside Bolton's visitation and ended outside the home where Officer Bolton was shot and killed.
