First day of fall camp for the Memphis Tigers, and it's probably a safe bet the volume level on coach Justin Fuente's voice will go up as he gets into practice mode...or is it?
The Blue and Grey, clad in helmets and shorts, began drills on the south campus Thursday.
Fuente said his team has done well with all of the new stuff thrown at them at the start of camp, adding that this year's players are picking it up better than new players have in past seasons.
But has the success of last season made coach Fuente, dare we say, a little softer?
"When coach Fuente first got here, it was ripping butt pretty hard,' says Senior Tight End Alan Cross. "But nowadays he's a little more relaxed with us. He knows we'll get it fixed and we're more of a veteran squad on offense."
Fuente added, "I think they understand we have a lot better to get. It's the first day. If you can't have a good day on the first day, you've got real problems. But I like the way we approached it, but obviously there's a lot of work to do."
The Tigers will have four more practices with shorts and helmets.
Full pads go on Tuesday.
