It's time to stock up on back to school items without paying state sales taxes.

That could save you nearly a dime on every dollar when you take into account city and county taxes in Tennessee!

Tax-free weekend starts in Tennessee on Friday and lasts through the weekend.

To help you get the most of your weekend, we've compiled some helpful hints:

Plan ahead

Use the tax-free time to purchase not just what you need right now, but also what your children will need over the next several months.

Compare prices

Visit web sites of several of the stores you usually shop to make sure you're getting the best deal.

Use coupons and take advantage of special deals

Some stores will not allow you to use coupons during the sales tax holiday. Make sure you check which stores will.

Also, always try and have a list ready before you go shopping. That will help keep you on track and avoid wasteful impulse buys.

In Tennessee, school and art supplies costing less than $100 per item are all tax-free.

Bigger ticket items like computers, laptops, and tablets are also tax free, as long as they don't cost more than $1,500.

But don't expect to get your little athlete stocked up and ready for the season: athletic gear does not qualify for tax free status. Neither do cellphones or computer software not bundled with your tax-free computer.
