Memphis ranked one of the "fattest cities in America"

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Memphis is ranked one of the “fattest cities in America,” according to a new study.

Obesity is a major problem in the United States. On average, at least 30.8 percent of the population is obese, according to the study from RentApplication.com.

The study examined data from the CDC and ranked the cities with with at least 50,000 people based on the most recent U.S. Census.

Three Tennessee cities made the list. Memphis ranked 15, while Nashville is ranked 19 and Tullahoma is ranked 12.

The top five "fattest cities" include Opelousas, Louisiana, Orangeburg, SC, Hammond, LA, Saginaw, MI and Roanoke Rapids, NC.

RentApplication conducted the study to examine the cost of obesity in America. Obese people spend 42 percent more on health care, according to the study. The estimated cost of obesity related medical treatments is approximately $147 billion, according to RentApplication.
