Burglars took advantage of this week's massive power outage and broke into a small Orange Mound church, stealing all of its electronics.

When the power went out, Restoration Memphis Ministries became a target.

"I walk in and cut the light on in the hallway and see that there's a door open that's never open," said Pastor Jerald Bailey.

That was the first clue that something was wrong inside the church.

Pastor Bailey said someone pulled the air conditioning unit out of the window, climbed through it, and took the church's drum set, speakers, and microphone.

Thousands of others were without power across Shelby County, so in this case, Bailey says it was easy for the burglars to get away with it.

"The storm knocking everything out in the community, no power, no anything, it was completely dark over here," he said.

But, the thieves didn't get away with everything. In fact, they left the air conditioner in the yard next door.

Bailey believes that whoever is responsible has been inside the church before because they knew exactly where to find the equipment. They left everything else untouched.

Since the crime happened in God's house, Bailey, being a pastor, has a message for the burglars.

"Let them know that God can restore, those were material things, they can be replaced," he said. "I'm glad that no lives were lost and that no one was here when the church was burglarized."

In the two days since the burglary happened, someone donated a drum set and a sound system to the church. The window is being replaced and Bailey is working to secure the back door.

"Of course, there's crime in the community. There's crime everywhere. Nonetheless, God wants us to look beyond that and save the soul," he added.

If you have any information that could lead to an arrest of the person(s) responsible for this burglary, call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
