MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

To make sure kids start the school year off on the right foot, one church is stepping up to make sure students have what they need to go back to class on Monday.

St. Andrew AME Church is sticking with a 24 year tradition by giving kids free shoes as they go back to class.

"In the morning people start lining up," said Roshun Austin, St. Andrew AME Church.

Year after year, hundreds of families come to the church's back-to-school giveaway in need and they leave with backpacks, school supplies, and shoes.

The giveaway began after a former teacher noticed many kids were not coming to school the first week because they didn't have shoes.

The church will give away 1,400 pairs of shoes to school-age kids on Saturday. Church members donate the money to buy them and Durham School Services chipped in by donating backpacks.

"There is a good need for people to stand in line for that many hours for shoes and school supplies," Austin said.

The fundraiser is not just for the kids, but also the church members who find happiness in helping.

"We've served many families for the entire time their kids were in school," Austin added.

Doors open for the giveaway at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 8. The church will be giving away shoes until 1 p.m. Any family that shows up should be able to receive a pair of shoes.
