MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Thousands of Memphis teenagers learned the ropes of leadership this summer.

Friday, the middle and high school students attended a back-to-school kick off for the Bridges program.  Bridges is a 6 week course designed to help students learn teamwork.

The program serves more than 5,000 students. Students from across Memphis are welcome to apply.

Organizers said the program proves Memphis' youth can have a good time without causing trouble.

"You can have fun in a safe environment," said Bridges Director Mario Hendrix. "When they gather in an area, they get in trouble or can't get together and have something productive."

Many students come back year after year.  Even the ones who graduate can come back to help facilitate the program.

"As much as it has changed my life before, this is changing my life now that I am on the other side," said program graduate Lucy Day.

Students said the program is an experience unlike any other.

"You cry together, you laugh together, you have a great time together," said program graduate Abas Pauti.
