WHITEHAVEN, TN (WMC) -

The fate of the Health Department Satellite Clinic in the Southland Mall is scheduled to be voted on Monday. Commissioners will decide whether to renew the facility's three-year lease.

Many commissioners see it as the first step toward guaranteeing health services to residents who desperately need them.

The health department has operated a clinic at Southland Mall for 10 years. Some residents said they do not know what they would do without the services offered.

For many living in Whitehaven, the clinic is where they can get everything from immunization shots to WIC services.

"Actually I brought my goddaughter down here to get her kids' physicals, school physical," Carolyn Lauderdale said.

The clinic also offers check ups for children and nutritional services training for new mothers.

Wednesday, members of the county commission's hospital and health committee voted unanimously to renew the clinic's lease.

Health department officials said it is a bonus for a community when health services are available and in close proximity to people who need them.

"First of all, we get to stay where we are. We don't have to re-invent the wheel," Janet Simpson of the Shelby County Health Department said. "We are familiar with the community; they know how to reach us."

Commissioner Justin Ford said he is optimistic the measure will pass.

"Most definitely when you start talking about health care, you start life wellness, you start talking about a quality of life," Ford said. "I think democrats and republicans will support this particular resolution."

Many residents said the facility should be rewarded for doing a good job.

"Yes, they do a great job, so they need to renew it three years. Plus three more years," Lauderdale said.

The health department operates seven community clinics throughout Shelby County. These clinics are open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., unless otherwise noted. If you have any questions, you can call the clinic center at (901)-222-9980. The centers are as following:
