A homeowner shot an unlikely burglar trying to enter her home.

"I heard all this noise and said someone broke in," said Dutchess Gathing.

Gathing said she let her nephew, Lederrick Branson, into her home for breakfast Sunday. Once he left, she noticed $120 was missing from her room.

Later that evening, she heard a loud noise and realized someone was trying to break into her home.

"I'm like, 'who is it, who is this?'" Gathing recalled. "I said, 'Oodie?' That's his nickname. And he looked at my face with a flashlight and gun in his face and I forced him out at gunpoint."

However, when she got to her driveway, she said Branson began to scream and lunged at her.

"He made a turn like he wanted to hit me or something," said Gathing. "That's when, I don't know how I did it, but I moved the gun off a little bit and I hit him in the shoulder and I shot him."

She said Branson then ran around the home, where police later arrested him. Police said Branson was taken to the hospital and treated.

Gathing said this incident is proof that everyone needs to know how to protect themselves.

"It's important you take care of yourself," said Gathing. "No one else is going to do it."
