More than 100 homeless students are enrolled in Shelby County Schools this year.

Displacement often tears families apart. However, one Memphis mother said she is making it her mission to ensure that families without a permanent residence can stay together.

Rebekah Fair said she and her children were homeless themselves for eight months. They were forced to move when mold took over their home.

"We were poisoned by mold in a residence that we lived in in Collierville," Rebekah recalled. "The fallout of that was, I want to say, astronomical. I was ill and due to my pregnancy, I was unable to receive the treatment for the mold I needed."

Xolani Fair, 9, and his younger sister, Ee'ma, remembered the time when they were homeless.

"It was horrible," Xolani said. "I couldn't spend time with my mom for a long time, and it was disappointing."

Rebekah said her family had no place to call home as their medical bills piled up. She homeschooled her children to keep their learning environment stable.

"I would consider it nothing short of a nightmare," Rebekah added.

Now that her own housing situation is more stable, Rebekah partnered with several nonprofits to provide other families with a place to stay. She's also raising money to build a scholarship fund to help displaced students go to private school instead of being forced to move from district to district.

"We're doing this rally in order to support ministries, specifically those that provide intact family housing and transition for homeless families."

The rally is planned for August 22.
