MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Members of a bridal party are distraught after all of the shower gifts went missing due to a mix up.

“She said, 'Mom, the gifts are not in my car.' I said, 'are you sure? You had a lot of things to take out of your car,'” recalled Mattie Keaton, mother of the bride.

Keaton's daughter Stephanie and her friends attended a bridal shower two weeks ago at the Half Shell on Winchester.

Stephanie Keaton’s friend and bridesmaid, Lauren Bass, put the gifts in the back seat of what she thought was Stephanie’s car.

Lauren Bass said, “When she called me, I thought maybe someone stole the gifts out of the car.”

It didn't take long for Bass to realize she put the gifts in the wrong car. The car Bass put the gifts in looked exactly like Keaton’s Hyundai Tucson parked in another spot.  Bass says the key fob even worked on the wrong car.

“I made two trips, locked it back up, saw the lights go off when I locked it,” Bass recalled.

Surveillance video from the Cell Phone Repair store shows Bass making one of the trips to put about $800 worth of gifts, gift cards and cash and remembrances from the shower into the car.

“It’s just a fluke. There happened to be another car with that code,” said Bill Fowler, owner of Bill Fowler Body Works.

Fowler said he has heard of it happening in different makes of cars but, “I’ve only heard of this happening twice in my entire career.”  He added that there’s not much you can do about it.

Mattie Keaton hopes the person who has the gifts reads this story and returns them.

“Her friends went through such an effort to create this time, this event for her, and now she doesn’t have what they wanted her to have.”
