City leaders re-launched a program that rewards people for turning in their guns, no questions asked.

Gas and grocery gift cards, University of Memphis Tiger football tickets, and vouchers for Grizzlies tickets will be handed out on Saturday, August 22, to those who turn their guns into Memphis Police Department.

Monique Thomas worries about the many shootings that happened in Memphis over the past weekend. She also worries about the number of people, and kids, illegally carrying guns in her neighborhood.

"Just having them in their hands, walking around with them, or just having them on their waist," she said.

Thomas' car was shot at a few months ago. The crime in her Foote homes neighborhood has gotten so bad, she wants to move.

That is why Thomas can appreciate what city leaders are doing to get guns off of the streets and out of the hands of people who shouldn't have them.

"You don't even have to get out of the car. You come, turn those guns over. We're going to take up to three guns per person," said MPD Director Toney Armstrong.

In the past two years as a result of the Gas/Groceries for Guns event, more than 1,000 guns have been removed from the streets.

Armstrong said crime in Memphis has gone down 6 percent in the past year. It's a statistic he hopes will help people like Monique Thomas rest easier at night.

"They're getting them [guns] from somewhere," she said. "We don't know where, but I'd like to see them in the proper person's hands."

The Gas/Groceries for Guns event will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, August 22 at Tiger Lane. The event will continue until all the gift cards and ticket vouchers are gone.
