MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

An unusually high number of people are dying in traffic crashes across the country, but the opposite is true in Tennessee.

A recent report by the National Safety Council said 19,000 people died in the first six months of 2015. That's 14 percent more than the year before.

Tennessee Department of Transportation released statistics for crashes through August 16. See the report here.

In Tennessee, 54 fewer people have died on the roads so far this year than through the same time last year.

TDOT credits their prevention efforts aimed at decreasing distracted and impaired driving as reasons the volunteer state is not seeing an increase in roadway fatalities like the rest of the country.
